Monetary System

The local currency is the Hong Kong dollar which has been linked to the US Dollar and fixed at the rate HK$7.8 to one US Dollar since 1983. In 2005, the possible weakening of the currency was limited to HK$7.85, and strengthening the ceiling was fix at HK$7.75. Otherwise the currency floats freely on the international money markets. The Hong Kong dollar is the universally accepted unofficial currency in the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen, across the border from Hong Kong, and in the nearby former Portuguese enclave of Macau.
